“PRAXIS: ART IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY” “Praxis: Art in Times of Uncertainty” is the theme of this year’s 2nd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, which runs from May 24 to September 27, 2009. The Biennale is organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture, and is co-curated by Bisi Silva (Nigeria), Director of the The Centre of Contemporary Art in Lagos; Gabriela Salgado (Argentina), Curator of Public Programmes in Tate Modern and Independant Curator and Syrago Tsiara, Director of the Thessaloniki Center for Contemporary Art (Assistant curators: Domna Gounari, Areti Leopoulou). 110 artists from Greece and abroad (56 collaborative and joint projects) will present their work in the main visual arts program of the 2nd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. The official selection of artists includes: A Posteriori - Dominique Fontaine, Anxiong Qiu, Alexandre Arrechea, Kader Attia, BeforeLight, Samuel Bianchini, Jodi Bieber, Mark Boulos, Sonia Boyce, Mircea Cantor, Yoan & Ivan Capote, Fredi Casco, Paolo Chiasera, Chto Delat Group, Carlos Cruz Diez, Lillibeth Cuenca, Hassan Darsi, George Divaris, Bright Eke, Maria Ezcurra, Samba Fall, León Ferrari, Rene Francisco, Alla Georgieva, Sheela Gowda, Jens Haaning, Diego Haboba, Khaled Hafez, Magdalena Jitrik, Gulnara Kasmalieva & Muratbek Djumaliev, Maria Kheirkhah, Kimsooja, La Pocha Nostra-Guillermo Gómez Peña, Hew Locke, Maria Loizidou, Oswaldo Macià, Mad for Real-JJ Xi & Cai Yuan, Melanie Manchot, Fernando Marquespenteado, Cesar Martinez, Megan & Murray McMillan, Despina Meimaroglou, Emeka Okereke, Amilcar Packer, Pahlavuni - Tadevosian Vazgen, Leticia Parente, Mauro Pinto, Qi Sheng, Jose Alejandro Restrepo, Azad Sargsyan, Singha , Bidyut Ngangom, Marios Spiliopoulos, Jinoos Taghizadeh, Clemens Von Wedemeyer, Maya Schweizer, Zoe Walker & Neil Bromwich and Mary Zygouri. Works and projects will be displayed in the following venues: Warehouse C, Warehouse 13, the Old Ice Chambers Building and the Pumping Station in the port of Thessaloniki, Outdoor spaces of the Port, the Bezesteni Market, the Bookstore of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank, the Bazaar Hamam (Louloudadika), the Bey Hamam (Paradeisos Baths), the Atrium of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Propylon of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, outdoor areas in the city, the Bar-restaurant .ES, the Olympion Theatre-International Thessaloniki Film Festival. The curators Bisi Silva, Gabriela Salgado and Syrago Tsiara explain: “The 2nd Biennale is developed as a suggestion to walk around the centre of Thessaloniki starting from the port and directed to the historical and commercial centre of the city, visiting Ottoman monuments, squares, institutional spots and places of alternative usage. Actually, it has been designed as an invitation to see once more the complex structures of the contemporary city and its cultural layers under a fresh perspective. It is an ambitious venture that does not aspire to reproduce the stereotypical structures of big international events; it is rather a multidimensional program organised with a view to promote collectiveness as a method of tuition action. Artists of different generations and acknowledgability coexist through their work in a creative dialogue, on an open communication platform. The works themselves, the quality, maturity and sincerity of their intentions determined our criteria of choice, without any decisions being pre-taken. Through the artists’ look we attempt to trace down alternative ways to denote the complex contemporary era, to question the impasse created by contemporary crisis and re-define the meaning of artistic action” | |
